Near-Infrared Light Therapy: The Deepest Layer of Skincare Science

Near-Infrared Light Therapy: The Deepest Layer of Skincare Science
There's a wavelength of light your eyes can't detect, but your skin can.

It's called Near-Infrared, or NIR, and it's the newest addition to The Butterfly Effect™, working quietly beneath the surface while Red, Blue and Yellow do their work above it.

If you've ever wondered whether LED light therapy actually reaches deep enough to make a difference, NIR is where that question gets interesting.

What Is Near-Infrared Light?

Near-Infrared sits just past the visible light spectrum, at 850nm. Unlike Red, Blue or Yellow light, all of which are visible to the eye and act primarily on the skin's outer layers, NIR is invisible, and it penetrates further, reaching into the skin's deeper structural layers where repair and renewal begin.

It's a wavelength widely used in professional and clinical light therapy settings, and it's exactly what's now built into every Butterfly Effect™ mask.

How NIR Differs From Red, Blue and Yellow Light

Each wavelength in the Butterfly Effect™ mask has a job:

Red light (630nm) works on cell activity and collagen at a surface level. Blue light (460nm) targets bacteria and inflammation. Yellow light (590nm) evens tone and calms redness. Near-Infrared goes further than all three — bypassing the epidermis to work in the skin's deeper layers, where circulation, hydration and structural repair actually happen.

Think of Red, Blue and Yellow as treating what you can see. NIR treats what's underneath it.

The Skin Benefits of Near-Infrared Light Therapy

Because it reaches deeper, NIR is associated with a different set of benefits to visible light alone:

Cellular energy. NIR is known for its potential to support mitochondrial activity — helping skin cells function and repair more efficiently.

Circulation. By encouraging blood flow at a deeper level, NIR may help deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the skin, supporting a healthier-looking complexion from within.

Collagen and firmness. Working alongside Red light, NIR is believed to support the skin's structural proteins, contributing to a firmer, more resilient appearance over time.

Hydration. Deeper light exposure has been linked to improved skin moisture retention, addressing the dryness and dullness that often come with age and sun exposure.

Calming inflammation. NIR's anti-inflammatory properties may help soothe compromised or reactive skin without the sensitivity sometimes associated with more active treatments.

How NIR Fits Into Your Butterfly Effect™ Routine

There's nothing extra to do. Each Butterfly Effect™ mask is fitted with 240 single-chip LED beads, each delivering one pure wavelength, meaning NIR works alongside Red, Blue and Yellow in every 20-minute session, not as a separate step.

It's full-spectrum care, from the surface to the layers beneath it, the same at-home ritual, now working on a deeper level.
