The Oil in Your Palm: Why N.E.O. and Marine Collagen Were Always Meant to Be Mixed

The Oil in Your Palm: Why N.E.O. and Marine Collagen Were Always Meant to Be Mixed

There's a version of "boosting" that's become a skincare buzzword. Mix any serum into any moisturiser, save a step, call it a hack. It sounds appealing. It's also not quite true.

Boosting isn't a universal shortcut. It's a formulation trick that works because of what a product actually is, not because two bottles happen to sit next to each other on your shelf. And once you understand why it works, one pairing becomes the obvious place to start: N.E.O. [Nature's Elixir Oil], mixed into Marine Collagen Firming Night Cream.

Why oil is the key, not the workaround

Most serums are active-led. Vitamin C needs a specific low pH to do its job. Hyaluronic acid works by drawing moisture through the skin at a particular concentration. AHAs need to sit at the right acidity to exfoliate at all. Dilute any of these into a cream and you're not just making life easier, you're changing the very conditions the formula depends on to work.

An oil doesn't have that problem. N.E.O. has no water phase to disrupt and no pH-dependent mechanism to blunt. It's built from argan, pumpkin and rosemary oils, carrying vitamins A, E, P and K along with omega 3-6-9. All of it oil-soluble, all of it perfectly at home blending into the oil phase already present in a cream. Nothing gets diluted out of activity. Nothing destabilises. It's not a compromise version of using N.E.O. — it's just a different vehicle for the same oil.

That's the real story behind boosting: it's an oil technique first, and it happens to work beautifully with N.E.O.

It also explains why boosting can feel inconsistent when people try it with the wrong products. Mix an oil into a cream and you're combining like with like. The oil simply joins the fat-based portion of the formula it's already compatible with. Mix a water-based active into that same cream, and you're asking two different phases, and often two different chemical environments, to behave the way they would on their own. One of those combinations is chemistry working with you. The other is chemistry you're quietly working against.

A pairing that was already halfway there

If you've used N.E.O. before, you've likely already done a version of this. Our own instructions for the oil call for mixing 2-4 drops with a little water in your palm to create a vitamin emulsion before applying. Boosting simply swaps that water for your night cream. Same motion, same habit, richer result.

Marine Collagen Firming Night Cream is a particularly good match for it. Its base is built around Australian Banksia, which supports collagen and helps plump fine lines; Tasmanian Kelp, which boosts hydration and helps skin hold onto moisture overnight; and certified organic IBR-Dormin®, which works while you sleep to support skin renewal. It's a cream already doing serious overnight work. Mixing in a few drops of N.E.O. doesn't compete with any of that, it adds to it, blending straight into the cream's own oils to carry its vitamins and fatty acids alongside everything Marine Collagen is already delivering.

The mistake most "boosting" advice makes

Search for skincare boosting tips and you'll find plenty of advice telling you to mix whatever serum you own into whatever moisturiser you reach for. It's well-meaning, and it's also where a lot of that advice quietly falls apart.

The issue isn't the concept; it's the assumption that every serum behaves the same way once it leaves the bottle. A vitamin C serum, for instance, is only doing its job at a specific acidity. Buffer it into a cream with a different pH and you haven't made a stronger product, you've made a weaker one, without realising it. The same goes for AHAs, which need that same acidic environment to exfoliate at all, and to a lesser extent hyaluronic acid, which relies on being applied at a particular concentration to pull moisture through the skin effectively.

None of that is a flaw in those products. It's simply that they were formulated to be used a certain way, and that way is on their own, on clean skin, given the chance to do their work before anything else goes on top.

An oil doesn't carry any of those constraints. There's no pH to shift, no concentration threshold to dilute below. Whether N.E.O. is applied neat, mixed with water the way our instructions suggest, or blended into a night cream, it's still delivering the same vitamins and fatty acids in the same oil-soluble form. The vehicle changes. The chemistry doesn't.

That's the distinction worth understanding before boosting anything: it's not a technique for every serum in your cabinet, it's a technique that happens to suit oils particularly well, and N.E.O. happens to be one of the best examples of that in our range.

How to do it

  1. Place your usual amount of Marine Collagen Firming Night Cream in your palm.
  2. Add 2-4 drops of N.E.O.
  3. Rub your palms together gently to blend the two into one emulsion.
  4. Press and pat into face, neck and décolletage, the same way you'd apply the oil alone.

One motion. No extra minute in your routine. No extra step to remember before bed.

What you notice, and when

N.E.O. is formulated to work quickly. Many people report visible changes to their skin within 12 hours of use, which is part of what's made it one of our most-loved products since launch. Boosted into Marine Collagen at night, that same oil is doing its usual job, nourishing, softening the look of fine lines, supporting a healthy glow, while the cream underneath handles the firming, plumping and overnight moisture retention it's built for. You wake up to the combined effect of both, without having applied them as two separate steps.

This is worth sitting with for a second, because it's a different way of thinking about what "more effective" means. It's not more products. It's not more time. It's the right two formulas, in the right base, applied together in a way that respects what each one actually needs to do its job.

Why this pairing, specifically

It would be easy to suggest boosting as a blanket technique across the whole range — mix this serum into that cream, and that one into this one. But that's exactly the oversimplification worth avoiding. Water-based, active-led serums still deserve their own moment in a routine, applied on clean skin, given the chance to work at full strength before anything else goes on top. That's not a limitation of boosting, it's just recognition that not every product wants the same treatment.

N.E.O. and Marine Collagen are the pairing that gets to skip that rule, because the chemistry supports it rather than working around it. One is an oil. One has an oil phase built to receive it. Nothing here needs to be "made to work" — it already does.

If your skin is telling you something different

Skin isn't static, and neither is a good routine. Some nights you might want N.E.O. on its own, applied to bare skin before anything else, especially if you're using it as your foundation-free glow step in the morning rather than as part of an evening routine. Other nights, especially the ones your skin feels drier, tighter or more in need of firming support, boosting it into Marine Collagen is the better call, because you get both the oil's nourishment and the cream's overnight actives in a single application.

There's no wrong choice here. N.E.O. was designed to be versatile enough to work either way, on its own, mixed with water as our instructions suggest, or boosted into a cream. Boosting into Marine Collagen simply gives you a third option for the nights you want the benefit of both without the extra step.

A ritual, not just a routine

There's something to be said for a step that doesn't feel like a step. Warming a cream in your palm, adding a few drops of oil, pressing it into your skin before bed. It's less an addition to your routine and more a small, deliberate pause at the end of the day. The kind of moment that's easy to keep up, precisely because it doesn't ask much of you.

That's really the appeal here. Not a hack. Not a shortcut. Just two products that were always going to work well together, finally being used that way.
