A Guide To Navigating Pre-Post Pubescent Skincare

As our children transition from childhood to adolescence, they experience new challenges and discoveries, among these is the flourishing interest in skincare – an interest driven largely by the influence of social media.

For parents, finding the best skincare for tweens & teens can feel like entering uncharted territory, fraught with questions about what's best for their child's developing skin. At Vannessa Megan, we’re committing to helping you.

The Rise Of ‘Skinfluencers’

In the digital landscape, social media influencers have become the fairy godmothers of skincare advice. Platforms like TikTok have emerged as the go-to source for skincare tips amongst tweens & teens aged 10-16. The Australian Retailers Association’s 2023 insights report says more than half of Gen Z start their buying journey on social media. With a flick of their virtual wand (or should we say, smartphone), ‘skinfluencers’ captivate young & impressionable minds with their skincare rituals, product recommendations, and the promise of radiant, wrinkle-free, poreless skin.

Enter a generation of skincare-obsessed tweens and teens – the youthful followers of skincare influencers who eagerly adopt the elaborate routines of their digital idols.

But amidst the excitement and allure of skincare lies a gentle reminder: while skincare should be fun and empowering, it's essential to approach it with care, especially when it comes to young, developing skin.

"A lot of younger people are seeing these messages about anti-aging, about wrinkles, about protecting your skin … when it's not actually a message meant for them," says Dr Michelle Wong of Lab Muffin Beauty Science, a chemist who debunks skincare myths — ABC Network.

Young skin is easily influenced by the products it encounters. Ingredients like retinol, abrasive acids, and harsh chemicals commonly found in adult skincare products, may sound impressive, however usage can disrupt the skin's developing barrier. This damage can lead to irritation, acne, sensitivity to the sun, long-term damage, and can even interfere with hormonal functioning.

A Clean Teen™ Guide

As parents, it's crucial to take an active role in guiding your tweens & teens' skincare journey. Understanding their skin's unique needs and vulnerabilities is the first step. It's not just about treating the symptoms; it's about addressing the underlying causes, and adopting holistic natural skincare for teenage skin practices that promote long-term skin health.

As leaders in the skincare industry, we’re committed to helping you navigate which products are safe to use on young skin. To show our dedication, we’ve introduced a Clean Teen™ badge on our product pages to help you identify which of our products are best suited for pre-post pubescent skin.

Educating Teens

Educating Teenagers About Skin Health

To understand and inform others on pre-post pubescent skin health, it’s important to know what's happening beneath the surface.

Acne tends to arrive during puberty. This is largely due to the surge in androgen hormones, which kick the oil glands into overdrive, resulting in excess oil production and, subsequently, those pesky pimples. But acne isn't a one-size-fits-all issue; genetics, stress, diet, and even habits like picking at the skin can exacerbate the situation, making each teen's skincare journey unique.

Skincare hygiene is crucial. It goes beyond just showering; these simple yet effective skincare practices can make a significant difference:

  • Tweens & teens should start by changing their pillowcases every day to prevent dirt and bacteria buildup.
  • After sports, cleansing skin to remove sweat and impurities is vital, as well as changing into clean clothes to prevent breakouts.
  • Keeping a skincare routine minimal is key; with a cleanse at night and a splash of water on the face in the morning to keep their complexion fresh and clear.
  • Leaving pimple popping to the professionals. This prevents inflammation and scarring, preserving the skin's health in the long run.
  • Regular hair washing is essential, especially if prone to acne around the hairline.
  • Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is crucial for maintaining skin health.

Safe Skincare Choices For Tweens & Teens

Understanding the right ingredients for young skin is paramount. Here's a breakdown of key ingredients and their benefits maintaining a healthy complexion throughout adolescence:

Pumpkin seed oil

Rich in vitamins K and zinc, helps to soothe and nourish the skin.

Petitgrain oil

Good for acne-prone skin, helps to regulate oil production and prevents breakouts.

Calendula

Anti-fungal properties, helps to calm and soothe irritated skin.

Kangaroo paw

Repairs skin cells and promotes healthy skin renewal.

Banksia

Contains natural niacinamide, which helps to balance oil production and reduce inflammation.

Hyaluronic acid

Provides hydration to the skin, keeping it plump and moisturised.

Colloidal silver

Known for its healing properties, helps to reduce inflammation and promote skin healing.

Lemon tea tree

Anti-germicidal properties, help to fight acne-causing bacteria and prevent breakouts.

AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)

Exfoliating properties, helps to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover, resulting in smoother, brighter skin.

Raspberry extract

Contains natural vitamin A, helps to reduce inflammation and promotes healthy skin renewal.

On the flip side, it's essential to steer clear of potentially pore-clogging ingredients such as coconut oil, mineral oil, lanolin, palm oil, wheat germ oil, soybean oil, peanut oil, fragrances and alcohol, which can aggravate skin issues. Some vitamin C products may also be too stimulating for young skin, so it's best to exercise caution when incorporating them into a routine.

Diving into a skincare journey is all about finding gentle skin care tailored to each individual's unique needs. No two skins are alike, so it's essential to experiment with different products.

Begin with a simple program – less is often more when it comes to starting a skincare routine.
